Rules

Do you have what it takes to be a member of the All Star Team? We are looking for the best of the best. Dancers will be invited to participate in our audition style All Star Team Dance Off. Register your dancers the day of competition for $15. Junior dancers (12 and under) and Senior Dancers (13 and up) will be invited on stage where they will learn choreography very rapidly and be asked to then perform it. The judges will choose the best performers until a top five are chosen. Our newly created All Star Team will get to perform the routine together and be recognized for their awesome achievement. They will each receive an award and be recognized on our Web site.

All Star Team Dance Off

Teachers may not be on stage or assist dancers from the audience or wings. This applies to all age groups. Exceptions can be made for dancers with special needs. Please contact Team Dance beforehand to arrange any special circumstances.

Alcohol and tobacco are strictly prohibited at the event. Repeat performances will only be allowed after a technical difficulty as decided by the Team Dance director. Team Dance reserves the right to add or cancel events based on entries received. Those already registered for a cancelled event will receive a full refund.

Props

All music is collected and uploaded before the event.  Studio owners will  upload music to the studio login page at least two weeks before your schedule competition.  After uploading, please review each track to make sure the right edits and tracks were uploaded.  Also, please bring backup tracks!  These can be brought on flash drive, CD, or preferably any digital form of media with a headphone jack (ie. phone, laptop, tablet).

Music

  • Duos/Trios: up to 3 minutes
  • Group Dances: up to 3 minutes
  • Showstopper Dances: up to 8 minutes
  • Solos: up to 3 minutes

Getting onstage and off stage should take no longer than 20 seconds, unless props are involved (see Props section). You may extend time limits for a fee of $25 per 30 seconds. A penalty of 10 points will be subtracted from the final score if a team goes over the time limit.

Time Limits

The group sizes available are:
  • Solos
  • Duo
  • Trio
  • Small Group (4-10)
  • Large Group (11-17)
  • Showstoppers (18+)

Small and large group routines will be combined at the regional level for overall awards.  They will be separated at the National level.

The Showstopper category is for routines that would have been previously categorized as Line or Production. Routines entered in our Showstopper category can be placed separately in the overall awards or can be combined with other group sizes, depending on the nature of the routine.  They will also be eligible for our overall Team Dance Banner.  Showstoppers labeled as Novelty/Character or Production will be placed in a separate top ten category when there are more than one present at an event.  Showstopper routines labeled with any other dance style may be placed in overall awards with other small and large group numbers, dependent on the city breakdown.

Soloists competing more than one solo in the same top ten category will only place in the top ten once.  If their solo age category is divided into style, then solos of different genres may be considered for more than one top ten award.  This is decided on a city by city basis and can be viewed on the top ten breakdown posted one week before the event.

Group Sizes

When a routine includes dancers of various ages, a team cannot compete more than one age group below the age of the oldest dancer. For example, if the average age of your team is 12 but you have a 16 year old student in the class, the team must compete in the teen category.

Bump Rule

  • PEEWEE: Ages 6 and Under
  • MINI: 7-9
  • JUNIOR: Ages 10-12
  • TEEN: Ages 13-15
  • SENIOR: Ages 16-18
  • ADULT: Age 19+

Age Divisions

Dancer's age will be determined by their age as of January 1st of the competition season.  The automated system will calculate the age for all routines. If there is a decimal of .5 or higher, the system will round up to the next age.  To ensure accurate placement, please enter accurate birth dates. Proof of age may be required if a dispute arises about accuracy. Please be honest with ages, especially with duo and trio routines.  Parents will also be using the dancer's birthdate to download their photo and video media so accuracy saves time and energy for everyone!

Age requirements

The Elite Star division is for advanced competitive dance teams. This category is for dancers who are performing advanced technique with accuracy. Teams in the Elite Star category are eligible for higher cash prizes and will be considered for the Platinum Studio Overall Awards. Dancers performing in the Elite Star division for their group routines are encouraged to compete their solo, duo, or trio routines in the Elite Star division. This category will be combined with the Star Division if there are not enough participants to warrant their own top ten category per Team Dance decision. All top ten category placements will be posted at least one week before the event. Any soloists wanting to compete in our Title competition must be registered in the Elite Star category.

Studios may choose the experience levels for their routines at their discretion.  NEW If the judges believe a routine has been mis-categorized, they reserve the right to retroactively adjust the category the routine will be judged in. If that category has already competed and received awards, the routine would not qualify for top ten overall awards. Studio owners will be informed before any category changes are made.

Elite Star Division

Our Star division is for intermediate competitive dance teams. This category is for dancers who are performing intermediate technique with accuracy and limited advanced technique. Teams in the Star category are eligible for cash prizes and will be considered for the Platinum Studio Overall Awards. Dancers performing in the Star division for their group routines are encouraged to compete their solo, duo, or trio routines in the Star division. This category will be combined with the Elite Star Division if there are not enough participants to warrant their own top ten category per Team Dance decision. All top ten category placements will be posted at least one week prior to the event.

STAR DIVISION

Debut division is for your recreational teams or beginner dancers. Routines in the category have a larger point range in our adjudicated system, *see below*. If your dancer is performing advanced technical moves (triple pirouettes, aerials, full back leg extensions, etc.) then they should not be competing in the Debut division. Solo/Duo/Trio dancers with groups numbers in the Debut category are welcome to compete in the Star category if they choose, but if their group numbers are in the Star or Elite Star category, their solo should be as well. Routines in the Debut category are NOT eligible for cash prizes and are not considered in Platinum Studio overall awards.

Debut Division

Routines may be performed in one of three divisions:

Experience Levels

Awards

Studios who received at least 50% platinum awards will be awarded the title Platinum Studio and receive a banner to display at their studio.  The studio with the highest percentage of Platinum awards will win the Overall Platinum Studio. Only numbers in the Star and Elite Star category will be counted. A studio must have more than 15 numbers in the Star or Elite Star category to be eligible and only 5 of those can be solos.  Routines must be registered together on the same registration account under one studio name to be considered for this award.  The Overall Platinum award winner will receive a banner and a $100 cash prize.  If there is a tie, Team Dance will calculate the percentage of High Platinums to determine a winner.

PLATINUM STUDIO

Routines entered in our Group and Showstopper category will be eligible for our overall TEAM Dance award.  This is to award the routine that envelops all of the four categories listed above.  This routine is determined by the judges choice and not by scores.  The winner will receive a banner and a $100 cash prize.

T.E.A.M. AWARDS

SOLO TITLE AWARD

Team Dance awards 1st-10th place to all major category divisions broken down in the following order:

- Elite Star, Star and Debut Dancers
- Age Category
- Group Size
- Style of Dance

If there are not more than thirteen groups in a category with some studio variation, Team Dance will separate the breakdown in the most logical place to create competitive categories.  Debut category will always retain their own top ten categories but Star and Elite Star may be combined if there are not enough entries in each category. If a category has less than 13 dances, the category will be awarded placements for half of the entries.  For example, if there are 8 entries, Team Dance will award a top 4 for the category.  If there is an odd number, Team Dance will round up.  For example, if there are seven in the category, Team Dance will award a top 4 for that category.  Team Dance reserves the right to offer more placements when deemed appropriate by the judges and management, but they will not offer less than stated above.  The top ten breakdown will be posted on the Event page prior to every event.  Questions to the category breakdown decisions should be brought to the attention of Team Dance Management before the event and before any relevant award ceremonies.

All eligible Top Ten division 1st place winners in the Star and Combined Star/Elite Category will receive $50 cash prize.

All eligible Top Ten division 1st place winners in the Elite Star Category will receive a $100 cash prize

The Peewee, Mini and Junior Title contestants will typically receive their awards during the Saturday Afternoon awards unless their title category is scheduled for Saturday evening. Teen and Senior contestants will receive their awards during the Saturday Evening Awards.

If there are 1-3 contestants, we will be awarding only 1st place Title
If there are 4-5 contestants, we will be awarding a 1st and 2nd place Title
If there are 6+ contestants, we will be awarding 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Title
If a Title competition is scheduled for Friday, the dancer's top ten awards will be announced at the Friday Awards competition. But title awards will still not be announced until Saturday after their Dance Off.

Please let us know if you have any questions!

The title winner for each age division will receive a crown and a Title winner tshirt.

Awards

Each Title contestant is required to compete in the Team Dance Dance Off, either the junior or the senior depending on their age. The fee for this dance off has already been paid in your title soloist charge and your dance off number is in your welcome bag. Please make sure your dancer wears their bracelet during the dance off competition!

Dance off

Please report backstage about 5 routines before your title section begins. All of the contestants in your segment will be brought onstage together in a line in the order of their solos. The first contestant will be handed the microphone so they can introduce themselves. This can include their name, their age, and the studio they dance for. They will hand the microphone back to the emcee who will then ask them a question. They will answer the question and then they will be directed backstage to prepare for their solo.
After the questions, the soloists will compete in their scheduled order.

When it is your scheduled time

Each Title Soloist should check in at the front desk. Parents can do this for their dancer but we suggest the Soloist take this step for themselves when possible! The Registration Manager will accept the headshot at this time. They will provide you with a bag with your Title Solo gear. This will include the schedule for the day, your onstage questions, your dance off number, and your bracelet. Your bracelet will be the way that our staff and judges will be able to recognize our Title soloists throughout the event. Title contestants are asked to be good teammates and good competitors at all times. The bracelets are removable so they do not need to be worn during their routines but we ask that they be worn whenever they are not onstage and during their Dance Off.

Your onstage questions will be available in the bag. Peewee and Mini contestants will be given one question and all contestants will be asked the same question on stage. Junior contestants will be given three questions and they will be asked one of the three onstage. Teen and Senior contestants will be given several questions they can review and will be asked one of the questions on stage.

When you arrive at the competition

Print an 8'x10' or letter sized photo of yourself! We call it a headshot because the picture should be of the face and shoulders. No action photos please. It does NOT need to be a professional headshot. The quality of the photo will not be used in the judging process. It will be used to mimic the process of a dance audition and for judges to keep track of the Title contestants during the event. They will be hung for display during the event near our registration table. And, of course, practice your solo!

Before The Compeition

What is the process?

  1. Perform and compete a solo in the Elite Star division at a Team Dance competition.
  2. Submit a printed 8X10 headshot upon arrival at the competition
  3. Introduction including Name, Age, and Studio they dance with.
  4. Answer an interview question onstage.
  5. Compete in the Team Dance “Dance Off” for their age division.

What is required?

All soloists that compete at the highest level of competition, the Elite Star level, are eligible to enter the Title competition.  Soloists may only enter one solo per dancer.  The FEE is $45 and includes their required entry in our dance off competition.  All entries must be received at least one week prior to the competition.  Title cannot be added upon arrival.

Who is eligible?

FAQs

We allow two solos per dancer in the Star and Elite Star category. Only one solo for dancers in the Debut category. Both solos need to be registered to compete in the same experience level. Only one solo can be chosen to compete for Title. A soloist can only place once in their Top Ten Breakdown unless the solos are separated by styles and the soloist is placed in two separate Top Tens.

No, only solos registered in the Elite Star category are eligible.

Students are given an opportunity to experience a real-life audition process.  This includes not only our team dance down but also the process of preparing a headshot and public speaking. Preparation and confidence are the gifts that dance can bring to a child’s life.  The Title competition gives students an opportunity to challenge themselves and build their confidence. By wearing their title bracelet throughout the weekend students will also be expected to demonstrate behavior that reflects positively on themselves, their studio, as well as their family. At Team Dance we believe it is important for dancers to understand the importance of their behavior onstage as well as offstage.

To fully register a routine, you need the routine title, style of dance, all dancers participating along with their birthday.  You are asked to enter the routine length but this only matters if you are requesting extended time for your routine.  If not, you can enter 2:50 for all routines.  Routine name and routine dance style do not affect their placement in the schedule and can be changed by you at any time until the final schedule is sent out.

We offer three categories and studio owners are given the ability to choose where to place in those categories. Debut is for beginning or recreational dancers. This is also the only category for Peewee dancers so please choose this for your little groups. Debut dancers are separated into their own top ten categories but there are no cash prizes for the winners.

Star category is for intermediate dancers or new competition performers. Elite Star category is for our advanced performers. Studio owners are welcome to place their groups in different experience levels depending on their level of dance. At the regional level, Star and Elite Star routines may be combined for overall awards if there are not enough routines registered. As a general rule, soloists should compete in the same experience level as their group routines. Dancers competing with their groups in the Star category can only enter their solos in Debut if it is their first solo experience. Dancers competing with their groups in the Elite Star category may only compete their solo in the Star level if it is their first solo experience. They may not compete in Debut. Only solos registered in the Elite Star category may enter our Title Competition. (see more on this below) Showstopper routines may not be registered in the Debut category (more info on this category below)

Our soloists Mini, Junior, Teen, and Senior age may register to be a Title Soloist.  Title soloists will compete together with the other soloists in their age group.  Before the performances, the dancers will go onstage to introduce themselves and their dance.  They will be asked one dance related question on stage.  Judges will be looking for poise, animation, and content of their answers.  Dancers will then exit the stage and prepare to perform their solos.  Their solos will be scored normally and be placed accordingly in their top ten overall awards.  Title winners will be awarded separately and will be judges choice.  Please see all of the Title Solo Requirements under "The Details" button on the main page for the full Title Solo breakdown.

The Showstopper category is for any group routine with 16 dancers or more.  These can include production style numbers, combined class routines, or any large scale dance.  Dances with 16 to 17 dancers can be registered as a Showstopper or as a Large Group.  Routines with 18 dancers or more will automatically be entered in the Showstopper category.  The Showstopper will have its own top ten category and special overall awards only available to these groups.  Overall top tens will be separated by age and then experience level when there are at least 3 numbers in the category when separated.  Showstopper routines may only register in the Star or Elite star level.

Team Dance no longer allows independent registrations, all routines including individual soloists must be registered under a studio name.  Studios should only have one registered account for each competition.  Routines not linked under the same studio registration will not be calculated for overall studio awards.

Dances that drift between styles can be difficult to place.  We do not have percentage limits for acro moves or other restrictions.  At Team Dance, we ask that the routine is placed under the category that you would like the judges to focus on.   If it is a jazz routine with some hip hop and it is placed in the Jazz category, it will be judged mainly on its jazz elements.  If it is a contemporary routine with several acro elements placed in the contemporary category, it will be judged mainly on its contemporary elements.  The category Variety is a great one for a number that just cannot fit into any single category!

Our system is as automated as possible so the information you give to us during registration is passed down the line into the registration and then scoring process without any input on our part. Whatever you list as the studio name in your account will be listed in the program and on your dressing room! If you see an error in your tentative schedule or your studio name is listed strangely, you can get into your account and make changes at any time (there is a little warning button that asks if you are very sure you want to make changes and the answer is yes). If errors are found after the final schedule is out, then please contact us and we can get those fixed for you! Correct dancer name spellings and birthdays are crucial! Not only does the system automatically calculate your group age off of that information, but it is also how the parents are able to access their dancer's photos and videos after the event.

Hopefully yes!  Competitions get to choose whether or not they are willing to allow studios to transfer the data from one competition to another.  Team Dance does allow that but not everyone else does.  When you log into your account, the option to transfer should show if possible.  You will need to update your Experience Level and sometimes Dance Style for each routine as we use different terms than other events.  Your routines will not be fully registered in the system until the Experience Level is updated for each transferred routine!

Studios who pay before the early registration deadline (6 weeks before the event) qualify for a 6% early registration rebate. This is automatically applied to your account until the deadline has passed. To receive the full 6% rebate you must pay with a check in the mail or eCheck. Those paying with credit card will receive a 3% early registration rebate.

If you need more time, payment needs to be completed before the event begins. We are happy to help with partial payments or split between card/check, just contact us at contact@teamdance.com!

To be considered for the Platinum Studio award, your studio must have at least 15 numbers registered in the Star or Elite Star category and only 5 of those can be solos.  Those studios who receive an adjudication placement of at least 50% platinum or high platinum on those routines will be named a Platinum Studio and receive an award.  The studio with the highest percentage of platinums will be named the Overall Platinum Studio and receive an award and a cash prize.  Studios may also have routines entered in the Debut category but those will not count for or against their total.
